Urbana, Illinois a 1940 Victorian updated and restored. Walking distance from my employment at the University of Illinois for the last ten years. Now walking distance for my son William as a U of I freshman Student.
I was impressed and thought he grew up fast adjusting to life as a college student while living at home. Every week we would meet a new friend mostly girls that stop by for a bite in-between classes and got to meet his mother and sometime me.
We even had the conversation could a girl spend the night. His mother insisted after several dates and her coming to dinner she would consider it. I told him in private if the opportunity arises feel free to do bring someone home but you have to deal with the consequences.
First semester down and awesome grades but with attitude he was expecting different. His chief Illini complaint he has not scored one actual date. Not one girl on campus would consider dating a freshman. But even worse girls are waiting until after college to have sex. The number one issue female students don't finish getting their degree is pregnancy. He kiss girls in high school but not yet in college.
His mother provide the standard solutions, join groups with a lot of girls and be active and impressive girls will fall n love. She also suggested girls like musician's and he should play his guitar at a local coffee house.
The Red Herring in the basement of a Methodius church. Home to Harry Chaplin, and Jackson Brown and more. I was shocked he went for it. I watch from outside through a widow. Afraid my presents would make him nervous. The crowd loved him and I was so proud, and so was he when he told his mother and I about it. He spent a lot of time there on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
My son wanted to be an accountant like his dad. That was his plan not mine. I was hoping at any minute he will say I want to be a music major and focus on my guitar playing. His first year over it was finally summer. He got a part time job serving coffee at the coffee house and he would play on his breaks, or at the end of his shift.
It was a hot humid August we had put a laundry shoot in for all three floor to the laundry in the basement. It was also a source of cooler air at we would leave the door open for air flow. It was two in the morning and I can hear movement in the basement. I throw on my robe to investigate.
I think I hear giggling and call out William's name as I open the laundry room door to orange and blue and two young men with the other young mans penis in their hands. Both penis and hands disappeared immediately.
I say sorry guys do mind me carry on and close the door. My mind was racing.
William on the other hand was freaking out and comes running out after me.
Dad I need to explain please wait I don't think I'm actually gay. That got my attention and I stopped in my tracks. He continues. I just tired of being alone.
William I love you and I just want you to be happy where ever that takes you. Live your life to the fullest. Go have fun with your friend and tell me about it tomorrow.
Every three or four days I get a random text Best Dad Ever. Go Orange and Blue.
