The two young men Jack (left) and James (right) has got campus security complaining. They have been three fights with each other on campus. Three weeks ago both young men were arrested by the local police for a fight at a off campus bar. Both boys are facing suspensions and were sent to me for counseling. After meeting with both young men separately this is our first meeting with them together.
Both admit to never talking to each other on a personal level and nether young man knows that much about the other. I start of this session by tell them what they have in common.
Both boys were born out of wedlock and with a mother they depended on her parents for support. Both of their mothers went to college and became for successful. They both got married Jack was eight, and James was ten. Both boys played football in high school but declined playing in college. Both were born in May and will be twenty one, and both live in the dorms.
The one thing that both young men do know about each other and a secret they share. Is the first week of classes their freshman year they had met each other. It was at a local bath house. Jack was getting ready to leave when he James saw each other. They had a brief intense encounter that only the three of us know about. Due to the fact both young men are currently not actively gay. They both refuse to acknowledge they liked it.
Jack - I was 19 and clueless. It was a bucket list of stuff to check out once I got to college. He is the only person I have done gay stuff with. It was a one time thing. Which he has to remind me about every time I see him.
James - I grew up around a bunch of pervy guys at a gym. I never did gay stuff, but they did gay stuff to me mostly for money. I liked it. So it was one of the first things I did went I got here. I don't fit in with guy dudes here on campus. I am hick, a redneck, guys that act like girls, nah I would rather have a real girl. I'm straight. I am trying to forget it ever happened and he won't let it go.
Me - So, for this next exercise I need you to hold hands.
Jack & James - No way. Why,? That's gay. It's not a choice is it?
Me -Who is the last person you had sex with? Jack first.
Jack - James I quit and I waiting to meet the right girl.
James - A TA last year he did me in in office for a not for better grade, just help on an assignment. I know a bunch of straight guys that let gay guys do stuff. It's not gay.
Me - I am going to give you both some homework that has to be completed before next week. Keep holding hands. First we three are all agreeing on a truce. You both have acknowledged that you both shared a gay moment together and have moved on. This gay thing in your past should be used as a reason to be friends. You both don't want anyone to know it happen. Now that you tried it and decided your not interested you are both safe to be friends. I have checked out your class schedules. I want the two of you meeting in the cafeteria and eating dinner together at 6 pm Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I will meet you both back here next Monday at 3:30 pm.
Before you leave I want to throw out one more possibility. You are both gay, always have been. That moment in the bathhouse to two shared. You found Mr. Right and fell in love. Neither of you knew how to get that back and it has been driving you both crazy ever since.
So, another solution would be to admit you are gay, come out of the closet, and be lovers.
You have twenty minutes left in this session, I am going for a walk. I want the two of you holding hands the whole time. Figure out a truce for homework assignments. I will see you next Monday.
Note Update: Upon returning to this office some minor moving of furniture and I found a note: It was signed by both young men. You are awesome, We are boyfriends and out of the closet. Thanks. Please cancel all future appointments.
They refuse to coming out in front of their friends on a possibility. Once they both realized that gay moment was special to both of them because it was love. Validating that they both felt the same way made coming out safe. A benefit because having each other makes it worth the risk. The you are not alone factor and love they have no choice but to come out. They can't keep their hands off each other. It was driving them nuts in the office the whole time.
